![]() In today’s society, motive is very important to a case. But not only the murder side, but the law side as well. This play can relate to today’s world because there are cases like this all the time. The men believed in the women taking care of the home and the family. It showed how woman in that time were smarter than what their husbands believed them to be. ![]() I liked the fact that the men were suppose to be superior to the woman because they care about the little things like trifles, but it was the woman that actually solved the case. I liked the turmoil between the women, but loved how they stuck together. The women they bring with them are their wives and their sole purpose is to gather some items for Minnie. They go to the house and search all over for a motive. The men believe she did it, but need to find a motive to be able to convict her. The ones that believe she did it are men, and the men are of higher authority, the sheriff and the county attorney. In this play, the wife is suspected of murdering her husband, but they are looking for a motive. Also, you would think that a woman would not be physically able to hang their husband. Normally, when you think of a person being hung, you think of suicide, but that’s not the case. A story about a wife killing their husband is not too common, but what was really interesting to me was the fact that she hung him. The play Trifles was a great short play.Īlthough it was short and gave you a lot during the play. The conflict allows you to see the struggle that is in the play and the climax is where we begin to get answers in the play. Conflict and climax allows the reader or viewer to stay glued to the play. Without these two elements there will be no play. These two elements are essential to the play. The biggest question is will they reveal the incriminating evidence. After her speech, you wonder what the ladies will do. In her very next breath she reflects back on here duty to be a loyal sheriff’s wife: “The law has got to punish crime, Mrs. Wright, remembering the loss of her child, “I know what stillness is 678). In her next speech she states, “We don’t know who killed him. She feels someone should be punished for the crime. Her first speech reflects her duty to the law, “It was an awful thing was done in this house that night (678). Peters has four major speeches that describe her conflict that turns into the climax. ![]() Peters finds her torn between her desire to save Minnie and her duty to the law. In “Trifles,” the climax occurs when Mrs. The climax represents the point of greatest tension in the work. The turning point of the action in the plot of a play is also the climax. Climax is “a moment, usually coming late in a play, when tension reaches its greatest height (683). The new dramatic question is posed, will the women inform the men about what they found or will the men find it themselves. Wright killed her husband because of his cruelty. Peters find the dead canary with the broken neck, that question is answered. This is the first question because it gets answered. The dramatic question poses a problem that must be solved. That is the question that you ask yourself as you read or watch the play. The county attorney needs a motive of why Minnie Wright killed her husband to prosecute her. The first dramatic question is the motive of Minnie. The next literary element is the dramatic question. Both women struggle with protecting the woman versus man. They also have conflict between the two of them because Mrs. Peters struggles with her dedication to the law, as a Sheriff’s wife. Hale struggles with the fact she wasn’t there for Mrs. They have conflict within themselves because they are struggling to make the right decision as it relates to Mrs. There is also conflict within the two women, Mrs. They believe that the women should wait on them. The conflict is from the men who believe they are more important than woman. There is also conflict between the men and women characters. This conflict takes place before the play actually begins. The first and most violent conflict is between John and Minnie Wright. In the play “Trifles ,” there are many different conflicts that exist. The conflict may occur within a character as well as between characters. The conflict can be a struggle between opposing forces in the play, usually resolved by the end of the work. Conflict is considered the essence of drama. The literary elements that the author used in the play are conflict, dramatic question, and climax. The scene is set at the farmhouse of John Wright. The wife of John Wright is suspected to be the murderer and the County Attorney and Sheriff are trying to find a motive behind the murder. The one act play, “Trifles,” by Susan Glaspell, is based on the murder of a man, John Wright.
